Fear and Dread

When we know something painful or awkward is going to happen, we dread it. There’s a level of anxiety attached, but we are somewhat prepared since we know what’s going to happen. On the other hand, fear arises when we know something is going to happen, but we don’t know what it is.

The fear of the unknown affects everyone to varying degrees. As a child we fear what’s in the dark closet, as adults we worry about job security and providing for our family. You can let the unknown run you ragged, but fear adds nothing to your life.

The serenity prayer may seem cliché, but it’s appropriate here. If you think something bad is about to happen, prepare all you can, and then be at peace. Worry and fear cannot change the future, it will only rob you of the present.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
