The Extra Mile

The service industry seems to have forgotten the benefit of going the extra mile. Be it airlines, customer service reps, internet providers; the bare minimum is seemingly all that can be spared.

In our six-second video culture, if immediate results are not seen, effort plummets. Going the extra mile in any industry or occupation may not pay off in the short term. Starbucks re-making your bad latte for free doesn't profit the company. But it does create a repeat patron.

In your work, and even personal life, there will be plenty of opportunities to go the extra mile. Many times it won't add another dollar to your name, but think about the long term. Will it increase your value in the eyes of your superiors? Will you be thought more trustworthy or reliable? If they know you go the extra mile, they'll seek you out again.
